Admissions - International Students

WE WELCOME INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

A world-class Canadian, Christian education in the heart of Canada’s most culturally diverse city.

International families choose Signet because they know their children will receive an academically sound, highly supportive and balanced education in safe, clean, welcoming surroundings. Canada is regularly hailed as one of the world’s most desirable countries in which to live and study, and the City of Toronto is a vibrant, cosmopolitan centre, ranked as the safest city in North America and home to more than 200 distinct ethnic groups speaking over 140 different languages and dialects. With its many museums, art galleries, sports venues, and annual cultural festivals, most international students report that Toronto feels like their “home away from home.”

Why Signet Christian School?

  • English as a Second Language (ESL) Program for International Students
  • Pre-University Program and Ontario Secondary School Diploma
  • Centrally located in a quiet, safe residential area in North York
  • Close to public transit/transportation
  • Close to major highways, routes and Pearson International Airport
  • Cultural amenities close by to enhance and enrich learning experiences
  • Green areas and nature trails in the vicinity

The ESL Program
International students who do not meet the criteria of English language skills must start with the English as a Second Language Program. The school will assess the student’s English proficiency to decide which level to start their ESL courses. There are five Levels of ESL. To move up a level, students need to successfully complete the courses and pass the exam. Students may complete two levels of ESL in one term. Upon completion of the program, students will have reached a standard of English that will help them fully transition into the English-based academic program and be successful at both secondary and university levels.

The English as a Second Language Program is based on a resource-centred model. This approach has been developed to support students at a variety of levels and meet their individual needs. Under the guidance of highly professional teachers, the students will be able to acquire effective communication skills in all areas of English, including reading, writing, speaking and listening.

The Pre-University Program
Qualified and highly motivated international students who aim to complete their six pre-university courses and enter university within a year are eligible for the Grade 12 pre-university program. Students in the Pre-University Program will complete three to four courses in each semester. Any remaining courses can be taken during the summer in July or August.
Successful completion of the Pre-University Program will lead to an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), which is recognized and accepted by universities and colleges in Canada and in major English-speaking countries, including the UK.

We are committed to educating our students from a Biblical perspective, with excellence in academics.

The school environment will be joyful and industrious, within a loving Christian context, where students may grow in the Lord.

Bible
We believe the Bible to be the infallible Word of God. It is God’s message to people today; thus, we give to it the place of supreme authority.

God
God is the one infinite and eternal, self-existent One—the Creator, Controller, and Sustainer of all things. This Divine One is tri-personal, involving the distinctions of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, coequal in attributes, creation, and redemption.

Our Lord Jesus Christ
Jesus Christ, eternally God the Son, by His incarnation through the virgin birth, became what He never was before, Perfect Man, thus combining in one Person two natures, both complete and forevermore. This Sinless One, in full obedience to the divine will, suffered the death of the cross. He rose bodily from the grave and ascended into heaven, where He functions as Great High Priest and Advocate.

Holy Spirit
The Eternal Spirit proceeded from the Father, in the name of the Son. He is the source of all life and the Holy Scriptures. He convicts men of sin, aids them in repentance and faith, and seals every believer unto the day of redemption.

Man
Man came into existence by a distinct act of creation. God created man in His image and made him capable of communion with Himself. Man sinned and is
now the object of redemption. Before him is the certainty of future judgment and unending personal existence.

Salvation
Man is freed from the condemnation of sin by repentance and acceptance,
through faith, of Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord. Salvation results not only in deliverance from final judgment in the life to come but also, in this present life, in the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit for the deliverance from sin.

PHILOSOPHY
The purpose of Christian education is to place the educational part of a child’s life under the teaching of the Word of God and the standard that it represents so that (1) the parents are assisted in their responsibility of rearing the child in the fear and admonition of the Lord, (2) the child may see the unifying whole of truth in the universe around him, (3) the child may interpret all information in accordance with the teaching of the Word of God, and (4) the child may learn within a spiritual environment so that his spiritual life is cared for and Truth is warmed by a spiritual dimension.

Therefore a Christian school will be distinguished from a secular school by the following considerations.

  1. Teachers will be consecrated Christians who view their spiritual
responsibilities to be as important as their educational responsibilities.
  2. The course material covered will constantly and consistently reflect the
Biblical teaching of truth, as well as a comprehensive awareness of the
worldview as related to the academic courses.
  3. The morals and standards taught and expected of staff and students
will be those taught in the Scriptures.
  4. The standards expected in all areas—academic, social, spiritual, and
moral—shall be the highest obtainable and at all times must equal and
excel those of the public school systems.
  5. The so-called sheltered, “hothouse” limitations will be consciously
avoided at all times. Contemporary views will be considered by students
with the Biblical reputation or perspective added.
  6. The school will obtain governmental accreditation until such time as the
government refuses to recognize our distinctives and the membership
    elects to drop this expectation.
  7. The student body composition (the ratio of Christian to non-Christian)
will be such that it will not upset the spiritual standard and tone of the
    school.

Two further considerations that are vital to the nature of the school must be
decided by the membership at large. These are (1) the interpretation of the
Biblical standard and teaching of God’s Word, and (2) the type of academic
school to promote.

PURPOSE
The purpose of The Evangelical Christian Education Association of Scarborough is to establish a high quality educational program that will lead each child to commit his heart to Christ the Truth, to grow in understanding, wisdom, and righteousness, and to perform his competent and responsible service to God and man.

AIMS
We aim to provide a learning environment of mutual trust and understanding

  • that motivates a child to discover God’s world
  • that deepens his understanding and appreciation of the diversity and
    integral unity of creation
  • that calls for a response in obedience to God’s Word
  • that develops an integrated Christian philosophy so that each student
grows in the understanding of what it means to be a follower of Jesus
    Christ.

OBJECTIVES
Our objectives are

  • to form small learning communities, each led by a teacher coordinator
  • to involve resource personnel who will lead the educational program in
    specialized areas
  • to employ an integrated curriculum approach considering themes and
interrelating subjects through participation in lectures, seminars, field trips,
    group and individual projects
  • to develop effective communication skills and other technical and scientific
    skills necessary for life.
